In recent years, Dresden has gained substantial traction in the fields of digital health, health electronics and artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. The Saxon state capital is now Europe’s leading site for microelectronics, communications technology and explainable AI. Both the Else Kröner Fresenius Center (EKFZ) for Digital Health and the SEMECO (Secure Medical Microsystems and Communications) FutureCluster are making an important contribution to this. The AIEFM offers the growing research community in Dresden and beyond a platform for interdisciplinary scientific exchange and networking with industry and academia. Established MedTech and microelectronics companies come together with academic and industrial research as well es aspiring local MedTech startups.

Secure Medical Microsystems and Communications

The SEMECO future cluster is Europe’s first medical electronics cluster focused on medical needs. The project partners aim to accelerate the pace of innovation for smart medical devices and implants. AI-supported regulatory technology, modular system architecture and dedicated microsystems are the focus of their work. The aim is to provide gentler and better diagnostics and therapies, to promote modern workingprocedures, to make innovative medicine affordable and to bring highly integrated, connected medical products to market faster.

Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health

The EKFZ for Digital Health at TU Dresden and University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden was established in September 2019. It receives funding of around 40 million euros from the Else Kröner Fresenius Foundation for a period of ten years. The center focuses its research activities on innovative, medical and digital technologies at the direct interface with patients. The aim here is to fully exploit the potential of digitalization in medicine to significantly and sustainably improve healthcare, medical research and clinical practice.
